Dr. Margarite Melikian DC
Back in Balance Chiropractic

Where are you from?
Yerevan, Armenia and Chicago Suburbs
Physician Biography:
Dr. Margarite Melikian is a dedicated chiropractic physician and educator, practicing in Willowbrook since 2008. She is committed to providing the best holistic natural healthcare for all ages, but her special interests are sports medicine and women’s healthcare. Her free monthly health talks are meant to empower and educate patients as well as the general public on topics ranging from vaccination to nutrition to osteoporosis.
Dr. Melikian graduated with honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. She then attended the National University of Health Sciences where she obtained her Doctorate in Chiropractic and a second B.S. in Human Biology. She is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Acupuncture.
Dr. Melikian was born in Yerevan, Armenia and came to the US with her family a month before her seventh birthday. Her fascination with holistic, alternative medicine started while she was a teenager as a result of her own medical problems. As a youth engaged in karate and track competitions, Dr. Melikian sustained multiple and frequent injuries leading to chronic severe knee swelling and pain. When the western medical model failed to help her, she and her family turned to acupuncture and realized a full recovery after only three visits. This experience inspired a newfound appreciation for health and a lifelong passion for helping others regain and maintain health and happiness throughout their lives in a safe, effective, and noninvasive manner.
Specialties and Strengths:
Applied Kinesiology, Nutrition, Female Health, and Sports Medicine
Continuing Education Classes Attended:
Dr. Melikian has over 250 hours of continuing education credits in Applied Kinesiology. She has also attended multiple Chiropractic Internist seminars, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Acupuncture at the National University of Health Sciences.
Techniques and Services Used in Our Office:
• Applied Kinesiology – a specialized technique that uses muscle testing and reflexes for diagnosing imbalances and determining what type of therapy is appropriate. It incorporates the diagnostic and treatment principles of all the following types of medicine: chiropractic, neurology, acupuncture, and nutrition. It is unprecedented in determining each patient’s individual needs.
• Chiropractic – a well-established form of holistic medicine specializing in correcting structural imbalances via manipulation. Manipulation is a powerful neurological tool for restoring normal neuromuscular and visceral function.
• Acupuncture – an ancient system of energy healing stemming from China which has been proven to be effective for a wide range of conditions. Acupressure and laser acupuncture are also offered as effective alternatives to traditional needling.
• Nutritional Testing and Counseling – used to determine food sensitivities that may not be detected by blood or salivary lab tests. Nutritional counseling is also available to those interested. Highly effective in improving digestion, energy levels, and quality of life overall.
• Sports Medicine – a mixture of all of the above techniques are used to take your performance to the next level, regardless of your sport. Applied Kinesiology is especially beneficial to the high-performance athlete as it can correct muscle weaknesses and improve timing and coordination through neuromuscular re-education.
• Functional Lab Tests – highly sensitive and accurate tests are offered in addition to traditional blood tests to detect imbalances long before they evolve into serious illness. These tests include hair analysis, urine analysis, and salivary tests. Detectable conditions include heavy metal toxicity, allergies, parasites, hypoadrenia, hormonal imbalance and more. Salivary tests are especially valuable for measuring hormone levels as they enable multiple measurements for more accurate detection rather than a single snapshot approach.
• Supplements – all natural supplements used to correct nutritional deficiencies. Many of these high-quality products are only available through health care providers.

How to Mix Liquid Herb Blends
By Peter Wisniewski
Mixing herbal blends in your office is fun, customizable and cost effective. Here is a short article on how to actually implement it in your practice. I want to thank Linda Ryan for much of this information. Before you begin, you will need the following equipment and reference materials:
- 250 ml. glass graduated cylinder (& long-handled bottle brush)
- Amber glass “Boston Round” bottles 8 oz. (8 oz = >2 weeks supply @ 5ml. TDS)
- An 8 oz. Bottle = 236.8 mls. a 16 oz bottle = 473.6 mls.
- A glass funnel to pour the contents of the cylinder into the bottles.
- Be sure to order with caps (or droppers, if preferred).
- Plastic 1 oz. Graduated medicine cups for single dose measuring/dispensing.
- Labels for the amber bottles.
- The Dosage Chart for Herbal Extracts.
- Herbal formula that you wish to implement.
- A piece of paper and a pen or printout our Blank Worksheet.
- Our Example Worksheet
- Kerry Bone’s A Clinical Guide for Blending Liquid Herbs.
- List of Herb-Drug Interactions from MediHerb’s Website.
Let’s talk about the glassware that is essential for doing this work correctly. Some people use droppers or dosage cups for dosing purposes. The graduated cylinder is used to mix the different liquid herbs before going into the patient’s blend bottle. The amber glass rounds are the bottles that we prefer to use, they block out sun and look great. Information about purchasing glassware can be found here.
Many reference materials are free and available through your Standard Process Rep. The labels are in Microsoft Word format and are customizable for your office. The Dosage Chart for Herbal Extracts is a .pdf document that shows the minimums and maximums in mLs per week. You will need to find the herbs that you want to use for your specific application. You will also need a simple pen and paper to complete the formula and a notebook to copy down your favorite blends. For a complete reference with detailed monographs and insight from a great teacher, purchase Kerry Bone’s book, “A Clinical Guide for Blending Liquid Herbs.”
Now onto formulating an herbal blend. You can also follow along by printing out our Blank Worksheet. Let’s start by drawing three columns right down the center of a piece of paper. Place the herbal tincture’s name in the center column, place the dose range down the right side, you will be filling in the left column with the number of mLs it takes to add the entire column between 100 - 105 mLs. At 100 mL a week you are looking at about a 2 week dose in the 236 mL Amber Glass Round Bottles. 105 mL / 7 days = 15mL a day. The trick is to balance the formula giving more or less adaptagens or tonics based on the patient’s specific needs.
In our example, I have a common adrenal formula. In the middle column, you have the names of the different liquid extracts, which are Rehmannia, Licorice, and Korean Ginseng. Their respective Min-Max ranges are 30 to 60 mL, 15 to 40 mL and 10 to 40 mL a week. We want to tailor the formula so that the left column adds to between 100 to 105 mL for the maximum weekly dose. If you want to give more adaptagens and less tonics you can give 55 mL of Rehmannia, 25 mL or Licorice and 25 mL or Korean Ginseng which adds to 105 mL a week. You could give three 5 mL doses a day for two weeks with one bottle from your office. You can see how easily it would be to add Echinacea for its immune properties or Chaste Tree for its hormone balancing properties.
Administrating liquid herbs is quick and easy. I recommend instructing and demoing the first dose with your patient, so they know what it tastes like. Keep a stock of dosing cups and it will allow you to demo liquid herbs in your office and send a few cups along with each herbal blend you prescribe. 1 cooking teaspoon is equal to 5 mL. The average dose of liquid herbs is 5 mL. Mix a little water in a shot glass with the herbal blend (about a 2:1 ratio of water to herbal blend). Then, shoot the shot down!
Now that was not so hard, was it? Feel free to ask questions or leave comments below.
