Midwest Nutritional Service would like to thank Dr. Stuart White and the doctors and reps who joined us for a fun and educational weekend on the island. We were all impressed with the knowledge and experiences Dr. White shared!

The event was held at the sound stage from the movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, at one time it was the second largest sound stage in the United States. We filled the room with 94 doctors!

Natural Fertility Education Kits now available!

We have recently teamed up with First Steps™ to bring a Natural Fertility Program to doctors and their patients. First Steps™ has launched a website to help patients educate themselves on Natural Fertility Methods and research into this emerging field. Working with area hospitals, they are giving monthly lectures on Natural Fertility for both fertile and infertile couples. See the site for details www.naturalfertilityprogram.com
The Natural Fertility Education Kits are based on some solid research:
Foresight is currently completing a larger study with 1,061 couples. Preliminary findings show excellent outcomes, with conception rates of approximately 78% (leading to a healthy baby) within two years of following the program. Only a 3.5% miscarriage rate. Only a 5.7% small birth weight – most of them twins. 66.2% of these couples achieved successful pregnancy with male infertility being the main reason. This study also suggests a more than doubled conception success rate for IVF, following preconception health care.
The kits include:
The kit includes a copy of Natural Fertility by Francesca Naish, a workbook to learn the methods, an educational CD with instructions and relaxation suggestions, a fertility thermometer, a personal lunar calendar, and a time machine for adjusting your personal lunar calculations to different time zones when traveling.
If you are experiencing fertility problems, know of someone who will benefit from Natural Fertility Management, or have patients that are planning on becoming pregnant, please call 815.575.9525 for more information and to purchase the kits. There are special doctor rates available, contact your doctor for more information about these kits.
A Review of the Relationship Between 100% Fruit Juice Consumption and Weight in Children and Adolescents
Carol E. O’Neil, PhD, MPH, LDN, RD

Theresa A. Nicklas, DrPH
Department of Pediatrics, Children’s Nutrition Research Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas
Studies assessing a relationship between consumption of 100% fruit juice by children and adolescents and weight are contradictory. The purpose of this review was to assess the 9 cross-sectional and 12 longitudinal studies that have looked at this association. Of the 9 cross-sectional studies reviewed, only 3 reported any association. Those studies used small, local convenience samples of preschool children; furthermore, selection criteria were not well defined. One found that preschool children consuming
12 fluid oz/day of 100% fruit juice had a higher prevalence of overweight than those who consumed less than 12 oz/day (32% vs 9%). Later, a separate study showed that this relationship held only for apple juice. Another study demonstrated an association of overweight and energy from juice. These 3 studies were not nationally representative. Only 3 of the longitudinal studies showed an association between 100% fruit juice consumption and weight; 1 found an association only in adolescent girls, and 2 reported an association in children who were already overweight. None of the longitudinal studies was nationally representative, but 5 had sample sizes of at least 1000, 2 were ethnically diverse, and 3 had geographically separate sites, suggesting that the findings could be applicable to wider populations. Based on the currently available evidence, it can be concluded that there is no systematic association between consumption of 100% fruit juice and overweight in children or adolescents. Data do support consumption of 100% fruit juice in moderate amounts and suggest that consumption of 100% fruit juice may be an important strategy to help children meet the current recommendations for fruit.
Immune Support During Flu Season.
By Linda Ryan
Human-to-human transmission of the 2009 H1N1 swine flu occurs in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus and/or by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching the mouth, eyes or nose.
Signs and symptoms of infection generally present within 24 to 48 hours and include:
- Fever of more than 100 degrees F (37.7 C)
- Coughing - dry at first. then productive
- Lethargy / fatigue
- Lack of appetite
- Sore throat, runny nose
- Body aches and chills
- Headache - sometimes severe
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea are common with this strain
The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness, although some people, mostly children, can remain contagious for up to ten days.
Prevention tips:
- Be mindful of when you are touching public access surfaces such as doorknobs, handles (grocery carts, taxis), elevator buttons, remote controls, telephones, etc.,
- Wash hands often
- Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Alcohol wipes, such as those used in clinics, are cheap and easy to carry in a pocket or purse for disinfecting a hotel room, or hands after touching public access surfaces.
The following considerations are intended to support the immune prior to an exposure (prevention) and to support the immune system to fight the infection if exposure risk is high, or an acute infection is suspected (under threat).
Prevention: Under Threat:
Andrographis Complex tablets 1 TID 2 TID
Echinacea Premium tablets 1 TID 2 BID
St. Johns wort tablets 1 TID 2 TID
or St. Johns wort High Hypericin 1:2 1 mL TID 3 mL TID
Ganoderma & Shiitake 2 BID
Also consider having Herbal Throat Spray on hand for sore throat relief and DiaCo Phytosynergist for managing fever. Both will also offer additional immune support.
Standard Process 21 Day Detox Study Released
In Volume 7, Issue 3, Pages 94-100 (September 2008) of The Journal of Chiropractic Medicine shows a new study of Standard Process 21 Day Detoxification Program and its impact on blood serum lipid levels. Dr. James P. Powell, director of Powell Chiropractic Clinic in Canton, OH took a group of chiropractic patients and placed them on a 21 day nutritional program that included nutritional supplements, a restrictive diet and fruit and vegetable consumption.
The outcomes are as follows:
- Serum triglycerides decreased from 116.3 ± 54.6 (mean ± SD) to 88.6 ± 40.5 mg/dL (P < .01).
- Total cholesterol decreased from 223.3 ± 40.7 to 176.2 ± 30.0 mg/dL (P < .0001).
- Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased from 145.7 ± 36.8 to 110.9 ± 25.3 mg/dL (P < .0001).
- High-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased from 54.3 ± 14.6 to 47.6 ± 10.5 mg/dL (P < .001).
- Weight for patients decreased from 191.2 ± 38.8 to 182.2 ± 36.3 lb (P < .0001).
This study shows the remarkable transformation of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL and weight loss that can occur in just 21 days. Ask your doctor for more information about the Standard Process 21 Day Purification Program.
